15 Things You Should
Never Talk About or Say
Before we jump into the 15 things you should never talk about or
say, let me point out three operating principles that will help you
digest and apply the points in this chapter.
Operating Principles
1. Think like Your auDience
Your audience, obviously, is an employer. This is the hardest thing
to do—think like the employer—because your brain is filled with
the things you’re thinking about, including being employed and
happy and making decent money. You’re probably also worried
about making sure you don’t end up in a dead-end job and about

this is how to get your next job
having a life outside of work. Not to mention what you’ll have for
lunch and whether you’ll run into traffic on the way home.
But you can and must don your Employer Thinking Cap.
Remember what you learned in Chapter 1: The key to success in
job hunting, and in creating a less angst-ridden and more successful
life in general, is to start where things are, not where you think they should be. In this case, you need to start where the employers’ heads are and understand how they will likely react to what you say.
This might be a good time to revisit exactly what they want and
care about. That list (What Employers Look For) is in Chapter 1.
2. masTer Your conTenT, Then go wiTh The Flow
By content, I mean anything you’re planning to share with employers:
# Your professional experience
# Your strengths
# Stories that illustrate your strengths
# Your breadth of knowledge
# How you approach problems
# Why you left your last job and the one before that
# Your reactions to questions about salary, working arrange-
ments, and hours
Contrary to what you may have heard, there is no such thing
as a perfect response to any question. There is no exact order in
which to line up your words. Mastering your content is not about
memorizing or using precise wording. It’s about knowing what you
want to say and the point you want to make. It’s about knowing your
content inside and out and being so comfortable with what you want
to say that it is second nature.

When you have mastered your content and know it cold, you can
have a real conversation and share examples and stories with ease.
You can look at what the moment is calling for, pluck out the details
you want to share, and go with the flow.
3. geTTing a Job is noT The obJecTive oF a Job inTerview
You’ve heard this one before—the critical, prevailing principle I laid
out at the beginning of the last chapter. The one you posted on the
wall. It still applies.
Your objective in a job interview is this: To explore whether the
company and the job are right for you and you are right for the company while presenting yourself in the best possible light. That goes for everything we talk about in this chapter too.
Like the 15 Things You Should Never Do, some of the 15
Things You Should Never Talk About or Say require more explana-
tion than others.
